Richmond SC beat the odds and managed to pull off a 1-0 win in their match against Murray United at La Trobe University Wodonga last Saturday. This will no doubt boost their confidence as they face the Eastern Lions this week.
Last week, Murray United were positioned fourth on the NPL2 East ladder and were clear favourites coming in to the clash against Richmond. The eagles were in 9th place and were hoping to take things up a notch after back to back draws against Sunshine George Cross and Box Hill United in rounds 22 and 23 respectively.
After the last showdown between the two teams, spectators had reason to look forward to a tight game and their expectations were not disappointed. During a closely contested first half, there were few chances for either side to gain the lead.
However, it was Richmond’s Dion Gavalas who managed to put his team in front with a goal at approximately the 30 minute mark. Ten minutes later, former Richmond man Gonzalo Freddi attempted to level things up for Murray United but was unsuccessful and the score remained 1-0 at half time.
During the second 45 minutes, both teams defended solidly and as with the first half, goal scoring chances were rare. Although the home side dominated possession for much of the second half, Richmond were able to hold on to their lead and eventually prevailed to claim their first win of the season away from home soil.
Murray United have moved down to 6th place on the ladder and will be hoping for better luck when they face Dandenong city next week. Meanwhile, Richmond remain in 9th place, however they have gained valuable points and are one step further from relegation. In order for their momentum to continue, it will be vital for them to win their upcoming clash against Eastern Lions who are currently seated at the bottom of the NPL2 East table and will no doubt be equally desperate to save their season and stay in the league.
